Appraisals
DLO Consultants offers the three types of appraisals, Class C, Class B, and Class A, as defined by the requirements specification - Appraisal Requirements for CMMI (ARC). DLO Consultants provides SEI-authorized Lead Appraisers to conduct the appraisal utilizing the SEI’s Standard CMMI Appraisal Method for Process Improvement (SCAMPI).
A Class C appraisal is the least formal of the three types. There is no minimum number of appraisal team members required for the Class C. This appraisal can be performed by a single person (usually a Lead Appraiser) or by a group of people. The Class C is usually used by organizations as a gap analysis, to help determine “where they stand” and what needs to be completed to get ready for a more formal appraisal (Class B or Class A).
The Class B appraisal is a more formal appraisal than the Class C. DLO Consultants recommends that a Class B appraisal be conducted by organizations that intend to pursue the credentials of a SCAMPI Class A appraisal. The Class B should be performed by the same appraisal team that will perform the SCAMPI Class A appraisal. The completion of the Class B, even though no level is attained, can be used as a highly effective risk reduction effort in preparation for the SCAMPI Class A. The Class B can be conducted with the same rigor as a SCAMPI Class A, allowing the appraisal team to gain experience by participating in the appraisal and obtaining insight into any weaknesses found. These insights are invaluable in aiding an organization to efficiently and effectively close gaps and fix weaknesses in preparation for the SCAMPI Class A appraisal.
The SCAMPI Class A appraisal is the most formal appraisal type and allows an organization to attain a Capability Level and/or Maturity Level. DLO Consultants usually recommends that an organization agree to conduct its SCAMPI Class A appraisal with the goal of attaining Capability Levels, allowing for a Maturity Level equivalence if applicable. By conducting an appraisal in this manner, the organization will have the opportunity to attain some if not all of its intended process improvement goals.
